Vibe coding: definition, value and limits
Definition
Vibe coding describes building software by describing to an AI assistant in plain language what should be created and largely adopting the generated code. The focus is on speed and experimentation rather than on every technical line. It accelerates early experiments but replaces neither review nor responsibility for the result.
Why the Term Matters
Vibe coding lowers the barrier to making ideas visible quickly and is therefore attractive for prototypes. For mid-market firms the decisive limit is that unreviewed code in business-critical systems is a risk. As a neutral advisor we frame where speed helps and where care remains mandatory, so that a fast start does not lead to a costly operation.
When It Is Relevant
- An idea should be made visible quickly and cheaply.
- A prototype serves learning, not permanent operation.
- Internal tools with low risk should be created swiftly.
- Different approaches should be played through rapidly.
When Not
For business-critical systems, sensitive data or applications with legal duties, adopting code unchecked is risky. When maintainability, security and traceability count, review, tests and clear responsibility are needed. Vibe coding is then at most a starting point, not the path to a production system.
Industries That Use It
- Consulting and law firms: quickly building low-risk internal helper tools themselves.
- Agencies: making ideas for clients visible as a fast prototype before the clean build.
- Start-ups in the mid-market environment: testing early experiments cheaply before investing.
- Business units: kicking off small, non-critical automations for their own area.
Typical Use Cases
- A fast click prototype to show an idea.
- An internal helper tool without access to sensitive data.
- A first version to gather feedback before a clean build.
- A script for a one-off, non-critical task.
- A draft that experienced developers then review and harden.
Decision Guide
| Signal | Vibe coding fits | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Show an idea quickly | vibe coding for a prototype | clean delivery for production needs |
| Business-critical system | rather not | reviewed development with tests |
| Sensitive data involved | not without review | security and data protection first |
| Internal, non-critical tool | well suited | weigh effort against risk |
Example
A business unit wants to show an idea for an internal tool. Through vibe coding, a click prototype emerges quickly that makes the idea tangible. For real use we then review security, data access and maintainability and decide what is rebuilt cleanly. This describes the method, not an asserted client metric.
Service Connection
Vibe coding fits the early phase of an AI prototype. For the path to robust operation, AI implementation and, for legal questions, EU AI Act consulting apply.

This framing describes common development practice. Statements on security, data protection and duties are general orientation and not legal advice; they must be checked case by case against the currently applicable legal texts.
