Function calling: definition and framing
Definition
Function calling is a language model's ability to produce a structured call to a predefined function instead of plain text. Based on the request, the model selects the right function and returns its parameters in a fixed format. A surrounding application executes the call and returns the result. This combines language understanding with controlled actions.
Why the Term Matters
A model that only produces text stays an advisor. Only with function calling can it trigger processes, such as querying a database or preparing a form. For neutral consulting this is the line between novelty and value. What matters is that every function is clearly defined and secured, because the model decides what gets called, not whether it is allowed. That separation of proposal and approval determines operational safety.
When It Is Relevant
- An assistant should not only answer but prepare defined actions.
- Free-language input should be turned into structured records.
- A model should select one of several specialist functions on purpose.
- Results from third-party systems should flow into the answer under control.
When Not
When the task is pure text output, such as a summary, no function calling is needed. And when the functions to trigger are safety-critical and no approval chain exists, use is premature. Then the question of which action a model may even trigger comes before the technical build.
Industries That Use It
- Insurance: turn free-language claims into structured fields before a human reviews.
- Wholesale: translate order and availability questions from a chat input into system queries.
- Law and advisory firms: classify client requests into predefined cases without releasing the trigger.
- Trades and technical service: turn appointment and material data from call notes into fixed records.
Typical Use Cases
- A model turns a customer request into a structured record for the specialist system.
- An assistant picks the right database query from several functions.
- A free input is translated into a checked form with mandatory fields.
- The model prepares a case, a human approves it.
- A knowledge-base search runs as a function call instead of free guessing.
Decision Guide
| Signal | Function calling fits | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Assistant should prepare actions | define structured calls | plain text output is not enough |
| Only a summary wanted | rather not | direct text answer |
| Actions are critical | clarify approval chain first | triggering without control is risky |
| Free input should reach the system | function with mandatory fields | manual entry stays laborious |
Example
An insurer wants to capture claims from a chat field faster. We define a function with clear mandatory fields that the model fills. The case is only prepared; approval stays with the case handler. Control stays with the human. This describes the method, not an asserted client metric.
Service Connection
We design safe functions within AI implementation; whether the use case holds is clarified first by the AI potential analysis, and legal questions by the EU AI Act consulting.

This framing describes common implementation practice. Safety and approval questions depend on the case and must be checked against your own processes.
